Clermont, IN : Two people were seriously injured Monday morning crash on August 18th 2014
Two people were seriously injured Monday morning in Lake County after investigators said a truck driver lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 27 in Clermont, just south of State Road 50.
The crash happened just before 11 a.m., shutting down all northbound and southbound lanes on U.S. 27 at Hooks Street for about an hour. The intersection has since reopened.
According to Clermont police, a truck heading southbound hit the State Road 50 bridge, and then crossed into northbound traffic, hitting a Dodge Caravan nearly head-on. The truck then rolled down the highway several times, ending up across the road, stopping next to a light pole.
The truck driver was airlifted to an unspecified area hospital. The driver of the Caravan was transported by ambulance.
"To be honest with you, I'm pretty surprised he made it out alive, with the number of times he rolled," said Mike Debenedto, who witnessed the crash. "He was going at a pretty high rate of speed."
Police said they are investigating whether a medical condition could have caused the truck driver to lose control.
This is the second crash involving a car crossing the median at this same intersection on U.S. 27 in just over two weeks. On Aug. 2, a similar crash seriously injured the mother and a cousin of actor and former WWE champion Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
The Rock's mother, Ata Maivia Johnson, and cousin, Lina Fanene, have been recovering from the Aug. 2 crash. Family members say Fanene suffered a broken collarbone from the crash.
