Kirkwood, NY : Man who died when he drove the wrong way on an upstate New York highway and collided with a state police vehicle on Route 17 in the Broome County on Friday, April 1, 2016

Investigators have identified the man who died when he drove the wrong way on an upstate New York highway and collided with a state police vehicle.

Troopers said Monday that 66-year-old John Roote of Morris in Otsego County died when his pickup truck collided with a state police sport utility vehicle on Friday. Authorities say Roote was driving a pick-up truck the wrong way on Route 17 in the Broome County town of Kirkwood when he hit Sgt. Steven Meyer's SUV head-on.

The 55-year-old trooper was treated at a hospital for minor injuries. Meyer is a 33-year veteran of the state police.

An autopsy found that Roote died of multiple internal injuries. Toxicology results for Roote are pending.
