Investigators have identified the man who died when he drove the wrong way on an upstate New York highway and collided with a state police vehicle.

Troopers said Monday that 66-year-old John Roote of Morris in Otsego County died when his pickup truck collided with a state police sport utility vehicle on Friday. Authorities say Roote was driving a pick-up truck the wrong way on Route 17 in the Broome County town of Kirkwood when he hit Sgt. Steven Meyer's SUV head-on.

The 55-year-old trooper was treated at a hospital for minor injuries. Meyer is a 33-year veteran of the state police.

An autopsy found that Roote died of multiple internal injuries. Toxicology results for Roote are pending.
