Fatality confirmed in massive tanker truck fire near Wilsonville Oregon
Oregon State PoliceThe remains of a massive tanker truck accident and fire on Interstate 5 today that killed the driver and shut the freeway down.
Police confirmed one person died in a tanker truck crash and fire early this morning on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 in the Wilsonville area. Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police identified the victim as the driver, William Neil Adams, 56, of Scappoose.
He was carrying an estimated 10,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline, Hastings reported.After the crash, local and state authorities shut down all north and southbound lanes of the highway for more than five hours. The northbound lanes reopened about 8:20 this morning, and two of the three southbound lanes reopened a short time later.from a tractor-trailer five hours after the rig caught fire on Interstate 5 near Wilsonville.
The right lane of I-5 southbound at Wilsonville and the Wilsonville on-ramp to the southbound interstate was closed to allow authorities to finish the investigation. Officials expected the highway to fully reopen by 6 p.m.The fire was reported about 3 a.m. and burned so intensely that Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters could not approach the burning truck. Cassandra Ulven, an agency spokeswoman, said flames could be seen for miles.
