Fatal crash that involved a military vehicle in flea mall
Newport Police are investigating a fatal crash that involved a military vehicle on Monday night.
The wreck happened around 8 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 70 and Chatham Street east of Newport near the flea mall.
Newport police are withholding information until family members of the victim have been notified. Police have not confirmed if the person killed in the crash was a civilian or in the military.
First Lt. Hector Alejandro, a spokesman from the Cherry Point Public Affairs Office, said Tuesday morning that the vehicle was being driven by a 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Marine from New River air station. He would not confirm the type of vehicle or whether the driver was injured.
He said military officials were cooperating with civilian authorities investigating the crash and would not release further details pending the investigation.
“Our deepest condolences and sympathies go out to the family of the victim,” Alejandro said.
