Two people were flown by MedStar out of Elk

Two people were flown by MedStar out of Elk Sunday night while five others were transported by ambulance for injuries the received in a two vehicle crash.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of East Frideger and North Madison.

Deputies believe both drivers were intoxicated. Investigators said they suspect both drivers in had been drinking prior to the collision.

In all, ten people were involved in the crash. Nine people, ranging from infants to adults, were traveling in a Ford Expedition while a tenth person was driving a truck.

The Expedition rolled at least once before coming to a rest on its side. There were four children sitting in the back row of the Expedition not wearing proper seatbelt restraints.

MedStar flew two patients to Sacred Heart Medical Center while several others were transported by ambulance.

Investigators remained on the scene into the early morning hours Monday working to recreate the crash.

"The truck that was heading northbound was veering right at a high rate of speed, this is a 35 mile per hour county road, he was veering right on to Frideger here, crossed what would be the center of the roadway and hit the Expedition," Spokane County Sheriff's Detective Jeff Welton said.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives said the driver of the truck is likely at fault.

Both drivers are being investigated for DUI. They could also face vehicular assault charges based on the severity of injuries among those involved in the crash.
