A Caldwell, Idaho, man was killed and several others were hospitalized after a rash of crashes on Interstate 84 east of Hermiston Tuesday evening.
Lt. Bill Fugate, Oregon State Police spokesman, said troopers rushed to investigate a report of a crash on I-84 near Milepost 193 around 6 p.m. Just a few minutes later, troopers rushed to investigate a crash involving two trucks and two cars.
On their way, however, troopers discovered a crash involving a total of 11 vehicles – six cars and five trucks.
Fugate said the driver of one of the commercial vehicles, William Hernandez, 47, was killed in the collision. Firefighters worked to extricate several people trapped in wrecked vehicles. The victims were transported to hospitals in Hermiston and Pendleton.
Fugate said high winds kicked up dust, limiting visibility and contributing to the crashes.
I-84 was closed for several hours while crews cleaned up the crash sites.
