Sarasota Springs ,FL :Michael Stephen Thorne, 63, Killed after crashed his vehicle into a median guardrail of Interstate 75 Saturday,August 29th 2015

An accident that injured a Florida Highway Patrol trooper and killed his passenger remains under investigation.

According to the FHP: At 8:54 p.m. Saturday, Michael Stephen Thorne, 63, of North Port, crashed his vehicle into a median guardrail of Interstate 75 on the downgrade of the River Road overpass. A Sarasota County sheriff's deputy used a patrolcar, with its emergency lights on, to block the northbound inside lane where FHP Trooper Joseph Angelicchi investigated the accident.

Angelicchi wanted to relocate Thorne to a safer area and conduct a sobriety test, the FHP reported. He got Thorne into his Dodge Charger and, with emergency lights on, attempted to cross the northbound lanes.

Jorge Charry, 37, of Tampa, reportedly drove a car hauler north on I-75 in the center lane and failed to move when approaching the SSO patrolcar. His truck struck the FHP patrolcar.

Paramedics took Angelicchi to Venice Regional Bayfront Health for treatment of serious injuries. They pronounced Thorne dead at the scene. Charry was not injured.
