Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that a South Carolina man was killed early Tuesday morning following a head-on crash on State Road 8 in Walton County.
According to a FHP news release, the 64-year-old man from Summerville, S.C., was traveling east at 1 a.m. in the inside westbound travel lane of S.R. 8 in a 2008 Chevrolet HHR when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2006 Dodge Sprinter driven by Marlaina Phillips, 24, of Melbourne.
A witness reported to FHP that he was traveling in front of Phillips and swerved to avoid the Chevrolet HHR, which then collided head-on with the Sprinter.
The South Carolina man, who has yet to be identified pending next of kin notification, was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol was not related to the crash, according to the release.
Phillips is listed in serious condition at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center while a passenger, 27-year-old Alexandra Parson of Altamonte Springs, was treated at FWBMC for minor injuries.
Charges in the crash are pending a traffic homicide investigation.
