Florence,AL : 2 Colbert men killed in wreck on April, saturday 29th 2017

A Saturday night head-on collision ended in the death of two Colbert County men and injured a woman, authorities said.

Senior Trooper Johnathan Appling, a public information officer with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, said Don Grissom Kimbrough, 63, Hawk Pride Mountain Road, Tuscumbia, and Phillip Lee Pounders, 62, Powerline Road, Tuscumbia, died as a result of the accident.

Reports indicate the wreck happened just before 9 p.m. on Hawk Pride Mountain Road, about five miles south of U.S. 72.

Troopers said Kimbrough was killed by the impact.

Pounders and his wife, Fretricia Pounders, 62, were taken to Helen Keller Hospital.

Appling said Pounders died at the hospital a short time later.

Officials said his wife was treated and later released from the hospital.

Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley, who pronounced Kimbrough dead at the scene, said he died from multiple blunt force trauma.

Reports indicate Kimbrough was traveling north on Hawk Pride Mountain Road and Pounders was traveling south when the accident happened.

Troopers said Kimbrough was driving a 2015 Volkswagen that collided with a 2003 Chevrolet driven by Pounders.

Appling said Kimbrough was not wearing a seatbelt.

Authorities said the impact of the collision was in the southbound lane.

Emergency personnel at the scene said it appeared Kimbrough's vehicle went into the path of the vehicle driven by Pounders.

Officials at the scene said alcohol was found inside Kimbrough's car and it could have been a contributing factor to the accident.

Kimbrough and Pounders are the 13th and 14th people to be killed in a traffic accident this year in the northwest Alabama region and the southern Tennessee counties of Lawrence and Wayne.

The accident remains under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Quad-Cities State Troopers Post.
