Sherman, TX : Wrong-way driver causes multicar crash on 75 in Van Alstyne on Tuesday night, October 18, 2016
Police suspect a Van Alstyne woman was intoxicated after she drove the wrong way on U.S. Highway 75 and hit three oncoming vehicles late Tuesday night.
“We have reason to believe that alcohol was related to the crash,” Van Alstyne Police Chief Tim Barnes said Wednesday morning.
No criminal charges were filed against the woman as of Wednesday afternoon, but police said they expect the charges to be coming soon. The woman has not yet been identified because she was not arrested.
Barnes said Tuesday night the woman was traveling north in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 in Van Alstyne. At approximately 10:40 p.m., she struck three different vehicles with her 2008 Toyota Camry north of FM 121. The two occupants in the first vehicle hit by the Camry were transported to the Texoma Medical Center. Their injuries were not life-threatening, and Barnes said Wednesday they were released from the hospital.
The female driver was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and a blood test, for which Van Alstyne police said they obtained a warrant. The driver was released from the hospital Wednesday morning. No other people involved in the crash were transported to the hospital. Barnes said the driver possibly entered the highway using the exit ramp for FM 121.
Barnes said evidence at the scene and a strong alcoholic odor originating from the female driver indicated that alcohol was a likely factor in the crash. If the woman is found to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash, Barnes said she will be charged with a felony intoxicated assault.
“We’re going to be sending those charges to DA’s office and hopefully we’ll get a warrant for her,” Barnes said Wednesday morning.
All southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 were shut down for nearly two hours, before emergency crews were able to clear the roadway. Emergency personnel from Van Alstyne, Howe and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
