Sunbury, PA : A crash on Interstate 80 in Valley Township on April, Sunday 23rd 2017
A crash on Interstate 80 in Valley Township that killed one man on Sunday has also left one person in critical condition and two in serious condition, said a Geisinger Medical Center nursing supervisor.
Tpr. Christopher Isbitski of state police at Milton reported Robert Thompson, 25, of Pittston, Duran Thomas, 24, of Wilkes-Barre, and Ashley Cruz, 30, of Bloomsburg were traveling with driver Kenneil Pusey, 25. He said the four travelers were headed from Bloomsburg to Wilkes-Barre.
According to Isbitski, the crash occurred at about 3:30 a.m. after the Scott Township police attempted to pull over Pusey for a traffic violation. Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn said Pusey went straight from a right turn lane in the village of Lightstreet, which is near Bloomsburg.
Isbitski said the Scott Township and Hemlock Township police began pursuing Pusey after the driver failed to stop while headed west on the interstate. Lynn said the chase reached speeds in excess of 115 miles per hour.
Isbitski said Scott Township and Hemlock Township police stopped chasing Pusey at mile marker 230 due to the high speeds and getting too close to a construction zone.
He said Pusey continued traveling west on I-80 in the left lane at mile marker 224.5 at a high rate of speed. However, Pusey went from the left lane to the right lane and lost control of the vehicle.
Isbitski said the vehicle left the road via the northern berm, traveled approximately 75 feet northwest and then struck a tree with its left front end. Due to the impact, the vehicle then rolled over multiple times and stopped on its wheels facing southwest.
Lynn said Pusey died from multiple blunt force injuries. Thomas, Cruz, and Thompson were taken to Geisinger.
The nursing supervisor confirmed Thomas was in critical condition while both Thompson and Cruz were in serious condition as of Monday evening.
Isbitski said Liberty Valley Emergency Services, Millville Emergency Services, and the Valley Township Fire Department were also called to the scene.
