Walnut Creek, CA : Four people injured in Two big-rig crashes in interstate 680 on Friday October 23 2015
A pair of big-rig crashes in the North and East Bay caused major headaches for commuters Friday morning as two freeways were effectively shut down for hours.
In Walnut Creek, a semi-truck crashed into the center divider on the northbound side of Interstate 680 just south of the Highway 24 interchange around 6 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The wreck reportedly sent debris into the southbound lanes as well and the truck apparently began leaking fuel, the CHP said. Within minutes the big-rig caught fire and was “fully engulfed” in flames, a caller told a CHP dispatcher.
Four people were injured, said Fire Marshal Robert Marshall of the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, including the driver of the big-rig and three people who were hit with debris on the southbound side of the freeway.
One person suffered a broken leg and another had head injuries after rocks crashed through their windshield.
