New Bern, NC : A Maysville fatal crash on May, Monday 1st 2017
A Maysville fatal crash remains under investigation, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and a Jacksonville man has been charged with disobeying traffic directions at the scene.
Susan Purifoy McNeely, 41, of Dover in Craven County was driving a 1981 Chevrolet truck on U.S. 17 toward Jacksonville Monday when she crossed into oncoming traffic between Belgrade Swansboro Road and Deppe Loop Road, said Trooper J. L. Morton with the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Coming from the opposite direction was 71-year-old Stephen Boyce and his wife, Sylvia, of Ticonderoga, New York in a 2014 Subaru SUV, Morton said.
Seeing McNeely’s truck coming, Morton said Stephen Boyce turned the SUV to the left to avoid a collision but at the same time McNeely turned to the right and the two collided head-on in the middle of the road.
After the crash, Morton said McNeely’s truck ran off the right side of the road and caught fire, becoming fully engulfed. McNeely was dead before officials got to the crash, he added.
The Boyces were transported to Onslow Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Morton said.
Sylvia Boyce was in serious condition and her husband was in fair condition as of late Monday afternoon, said Amy Sousa, senior vice president of public relations with the hospital.
Witnesses who’d been driving behind McNeely told Morton she’d been driving slightly erratic before the crash and her husband told Morton she was on the way to a doctor’s appointment in Jacksonville, Morton said.
