Marion County deputies are investigating a crash west of Stayton that left a cyclist dead Thursday morning.

Charles Michael Phillips, 46, of Aumsville, was riding east on Shaff Road SE near Rainwater Road SE around 6:30 a.m. when he was hit by an eastbound minivan, officials said.

Lt. Chris Baldridge, a Marion County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Phillips died instantly. The driver of the minivan, Wendy Jordan, 38, of Aumsville, remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies. The investigation closed Shaff Road for two hours. The road reopened shortly before 9 a.m. Both Phillips and Jordan were on their way to their jobs, Baldridge said.

Baldridge said the crash took place on a section of the road with very little shoulder and no lighting.

It was a dark and rainy morning, he added, and Phillips was wearing dark clothing and had no light on his bicycle.

The investigation remains ongoing. Baldridge said is it is unknown whether Jordan will face any charges related to the crash.
