MEMPHIS, TN : Victim identified in fatal crash that shut down Lamar Ave on Wednesday, 5th October 2016

Memphis Police Department identified the victim who died following a crash that shut down Lamar Avenue Wednesday morning.

Officers said a dark pickup truck and a garbage truck collided just after 5 a.m.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Miguel Sotelo, 63, was taken to Regional Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators said the driver of the second vehicle said he was turning onto Concorde Road when he was hit by the Sotelo’s truck.

Drivers who frequent the area said this deadly crash is just one example of why the Lamar-Concorde intersection needs to be made safer.

"18-wheelers come there; people from all across the world come there." Willie Wilson said. "You see people running this light all the time."

Wilson said he always waits a few extra seconds when driving through the intersection.

"When the light turns green, I'll set a couple of seconds just to see what the next person might do," Wilson said. "You got to pay attention for yourself and other people."

He said he hopes the city puts more officers in the area to monitor reckless driving. He said that could mean a life saved.
