Augusta,ME : Passenger dies after being thrown from vehicle in Bath crash on August, Tuesday 1st 2017

A passenger who was thrown from a Jeep Grand Cherokee when it crashed into a pickup truck on Leeman Highway in Bath on Tuesday has died.

Sheldon Curtis, 31, of Tenants Harbor, a passenger in the front seat of the Jeep, died as a result of massive head injuries, Bath police Lt. Robert Savary wrote Wednesday in a release.

Curtis was thrown into a concrete abutment on the northwest corner of the intersection of Middle Street and Leeman Highway, which is part of Route 1 in Bath. He was pronounced dead at the Maine Medical Center in Portland approximately one hour after the collision occurred.

The driver of the Jeep, Travis Robbins, 28, of Rockland, and the driver of the GMC Sierra pickup, Brian Trainor, 48, of Canton, Massachusetts, suffered minor injuries, which were treated at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

William Gerrish II, 63, whose last known address was in Old Orchard Beach, was a passenger in the back seat of Robbins’ vehicle. He suffered what police described as serious injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police do not believe any of the four men were wearing safety belts.

“Although it is impossible to say with complete certainty that the use of a seatbelt would have saved Mr. Curtis, we believe his chances of survival would have been increased dramatically if he was wearing one,” Savary said in the release.

No charges have been filed. The incident remains under investigation.
