Thompson's Station, TN : One person died, TDOT worker injured in a two-vehicle wreck on State Route 840 in Williamson County on Monday, Nov 9, 2015

One person was killed a crash involving a Tennessee Department of Transportation vehicle on State Route 840, the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed.

The two-vehicle wreck happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes at mile marker 27, which is at the exit for Columbia Pike.

Officials said a TDOT employee was on the side of the road picking up trash when a vehicle lost control and struck his vehicle. The TDOT worker was then thrown over the guardrail.

The TDOT worker and taken to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Officials said his injuries are serious, but he is expected to be OK.

The driver of the other vehicle was killed. The victim was later identified as 62-year-old Steven Frolich of Thompson's Station.

“We of course want our workers to stay safe, but one of the realities is most of our workers are out in big heavy trucks and others types of equipment, and quite frankly it is usually the other motorist who hits one of our vehicles that ends up being more seriously injured than our workers,” said B.J. Doughty with TDOT. “Or in the case of today, this was actually a fatality.”

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

Eastbound lanes were closed for several hours, but have since reopened.
