Arcadia, CA : Arroyo High assistant softball coach, two others die in Arcadia rollover crash early Tuesday morning, December 13, 2016
An assistant coach for the Arroyo High School junior varsity softball team was among the three people killed when a car struck a wall and overturned early Tuesday morning.
Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter identified the three who were killed as Raymond Daniel Yniquez, 21, of Pomona, Marcus J. Garcia, 21, and Anna Lissa Velazquez, who turned 25 on Monday.
One other man survived the crash, but suffered critical injuries. Winter said the man was taken to Methodist Hospital of Southern California.
The fatal crash occurred around 1:50 a.m.
Arcadia Police Sgt. Dan Crowther said a vehicle heading west on Live Oak Avenue near Las Tunas Drive may have lost control. The car overturned after colliding with a wall.
He said officers who responded to a crash at the intersection found the overturned vehicle with four people still inside.
Firefighters freed the man from the car who sustained significant injuries, then rushed him to the hospital. But Yniquez, Garcia and Velazquez all died at the scene.
Yniquez graduated from Arroyo High School in El Monte in 2013. Principal Angelita Gonzales-Hernandez said Yniquez was an assistant coach at the school for the last three years.
“He was a great kid,” she said. “He was a great asset to our program.”
She said she expects Yniquez to be missed greatly by the girls on the team.
Gonzales-Hernandez described Yniquez as cheerful and outgoing. She said he always had a smile on his face.
“He was an outstanding person, very personable,” she said. “He would go out of his way to help others.”
She said she didn’t know Garcia. But she said she believed the 21-year-old was also an alumnus.
Jim Singiser, athletic director and football coach at Arroyo High, said Yniquez was popular with kids at the school, and was really well liked.
When he attended the school, Yniquez was a two-sport athlete, playing freshman football and baseball, Singiser said.
Police shut down eastbound and westbound traffic on Live Oak Avenue and Las Tunas Drive between Santa Anita Avenue and Welland Avenue for several hours.
