Craig, CO : 29-year-old man killed in vehicle crash near Kremmling on Tuesday afternoon, March 14, 2017

A 29-year-old Craig man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash outside of Kremmling.

The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. at about milepost 181 on Colorado Highway 40. Anna Gates, 21, of Craig, was traveling eastbound, driving a blue 1988 Ford Bronco II with a male passenger in the back seat.

The car drove off the left side of the road and down a steep embankment. The vehicle rolled multiple times, ejecting the passenger.

The passenger, Justin Ketchum, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Gates was transported to Kremmling Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

“Bumps and bruises, mostly,” said Sgt. Coby Smart, a public information officer with State Patrol, of Gates’s injuries.

Smart said a further interview with Gates revealed she fell asleep behind the wheel and veered off the road.

He added that neither Gates nor Ketchum were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

A news release from State Patrol said the agency “would like to remind drivers to make sure all occupants are securely buckled up before driving.”

The Craig Daily Press will have more on this story as it develops.
