Santaquin, UT : Man crashes into telephone pole, arrested for DUI on Thursday night, October 30, 2014
Police say a Santaquin man has been arrested for driving under the influence after hitting a telephone pole late Thursday night and fleeing the scene.
Police reports state officers were called to a Maverik in Santaquin for a public disturbance. When they arrived, they met a man who told police he and his cousin, Samuel Sant, got into an accident earlier and that his cousin wrecked a black pickup truck into a nearby telephone pole.
Reports state the man told police that once they hit the pole, they left the area and went to his cousin’s home. He and his cousin, Samuel Sant, got into a drunken argument, and the man left and went to the Maverik.
Police made contact with Sant, who reportedly smelled strongly of alcohol and admitted crashing his vehicle into the telephone pole. Sant told police his cousin was yelling obscenities out the window at people and flipping them off while the pair drove, according to the report.
Sant also reportedly said he heard sirens behind him and fled to avoid trouble. Police reports state it is unknown if police were trying to stop him. Sant, 38, then struck the telephone pole near a nursing home in Santaquin while he was attempting to speed away.
Police reports say Sant's car was totaled, the bumper smashed in and the suspension ruined. Police conducted several sobriety tests, and Sant reportedly failed most of them and was booked into the Utah County Jail.
After arriving at the jail, he was administered an intoxilyzer test, which reportedly indicated he had a blood alcohol level of .156, well above the legal limit. Sant was also reportedly an alcohol-restricted driver due to prior DUI arrests.
Sant was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, a third-degree felony; failure to remain at the scene of an accident, a class B misdemeanor; drinking alcohol while restricted, a class B misdemeanor; and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.
