North Platte, NE : No injuries in fiery wreck near Cozad on Friday, December 30, 2016
A fiery crash on Interstate 80 near Cozad destroyed a vehicle, set grass on fire at the crash site, but resulted in no injuries.
Shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday a vehicle heading westbound in the passing lane near Cozad drifted into the right lane and hit the back of a semi, also heading westbound, before exiting the roadway to the north. The vehicle caught fire and entered the north side ditch before coming to rest in a tree-lined grassy area.
An investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol revealed that the driver fell asleep before the accident occurred.
Steve Walker, a volunteer with Cozad Fire and Rescue, who responded to the call, said it took firefighters about a half-hour to forty-five minutes to put out the fire.
There were no injuries in the incident, but the vehicle was destroyed.
Also at the scene were the Cozad Police Department and Gothenburg Rescue.
