Missoula, MT : Pedestrian hit, killed by semitrailer on I-90 in Missoula on Friday, January 23, 2015
The Missoula County Sheriff’s Department secured the scene of a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian on Interstate 90 early Friday morning, and the Montana Highway Patrol spent the day investigating the accident.
MHP Sgt. Chad Dever said the incident occurred at mile marker 106 on I-90 between Missoula and East Missoula. The crash was reported to law enforcement at 2:19 a.m.
Dever said the pedestrian was struck by a westbound tractor-trailer. The driver was not injured.
“The evidence shows that the semi applied breaking in the traffic lanes,” Dever said. “There’s no indication the vehicle swerved off the road to strike the pedestrian.”
Dever said investigators are trying to piece together the hours leading up to the pedestrian’s death and determine what he was doing on the interstate.
“That’s exactly what the investigation is looking into,” Dever said. “An obvious question is why someone was on the interstate at 2 a.m.”
The name of the victim has not been released, pending notification of family. He was described only as a young adult male.
Lt. Scott Newell of the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department said law enforcement was still trying to contact the family. He said they’d located the residence, but no one was home.
“We won’t be able to release any information on the individual until the family is notified, and they live out of state” Newell said.
