York, PA : Propane truck crash, fire keep responders busy on Wednesday, November 16th 2016
A propane delivery truck crashed in Jackson Township on Wednesday morning, triggering a plume of fire that was expected to keep firefighters busy well into the evening as they awaited the gas to escape.
Ray Kinsey, chief of the York County Haz-Mat Team, said firefighters would monitor the fire until all of the gas was dispersed. Dousing the truck with water could lead to an explosion, he said.
"We're going to allow it burn out," he said. "There's no sense in trying to put this out."
Several hours after the crash, reported at 8:23 a.m. at South Lake and Jackson Square roads, KInsey said the fire was "contained ... the public is safe."
Red Cross volunteers provided canteen services to the more than 100 first responders who worked at the site different times throughout the day, along with providing a comfort station for those who had to leave their homes, according to a news release.
Kinsey said the truck was carrying about 2,400 gallons of propane when it went around a corner at South Lake Road, careened through a guide rail, down an embankment and then rolled onto its side.
The crash caused several leaks in the truck, including the tank's valve, which triggered the plume of fire, Kinsey said. The driver of the truck, whose name and company he did not release, was rescued and taken to York Hospital.
