A South Central High School graduate was killed on Sunday after an impaired driver crossed a double line and struck another vehicle, according to the Durham Police Department.
The wreck occurred about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday on East Geer Street near Cheek Road, according to a news release issued by the department. An eastbound vehicle driven by Natasha Lynn Taylor, 25, of Durham crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic and struck a westbound vehicle driven by Quillon Rendleman, 18, of Charlotte.
Myiah Andrews, 18, of Greenville, a passenger in Rendleman’s vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release. Rendleman, Taylor and two other passengers in Rendlemen’s vehicle — NCCU students Jeremiah Phronebarger and Celi Smithwere — were taken to the hospital. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to the news release.
Andrews was a freshman and a pre-nursing major at North Carolina Central University, according to the university’s website. A vigil was held on campus on Monday in her honor.
Pitt County Schools spokesman Travis Lewis said Andrews graduated from South Central in 2016. Counselors and crisis support staff were available on Monday at the school, Lewis said. Staff from the offices of Student Health and Counseling Services and Spiritual Development and Dialogue were available to NCCU students on Monday.
Taylor was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and failing to maintain lane control. She is in the Durham County Detention Center under a $250,000 bond.
