Waco, TX : Deputy involved in rollover crash on Wednesday, December 7th 2016
A McLennan County Sheriff’s Office deputy drove through a red light with no active emergency lights and struck a vehicle traveling through the intersection of South 17th Street and Austin Avenue on Wednesday night, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. D.L. Wilson said.
Shortly after 9 p.m., DPS and Waco police were called to the intersection. DPS reported a 2017 Mirage was stopped at a traffic light facing west on 17th Street. When the traffic signal turned green, the Mirage proceeded through the intersection when a marked McLennan County patrol unit, a 2014 Tahoe, reportedly drove through a red light and continued south on Austin Avenue, where the deputy struck the back-end of the Mirage, Wilson stated.
The collision caused the Mirage to flip onto its top.
“The Tahoe pulled over and stopped to check on the occupants’ safety in the Mirage,” Wilson said.
The driver of the Mirage, a 21-year-old woman, and her passenger, a 19-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries, but neither requested transport to a local hospital. Wilson said the deputy had no reported injuries.
McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said the deputy was on routine duty at the time of the crash and returned to full-duty later that night. He said the incident was an accident, and he was glad no one was seriously injured.
Wilson declined to release the names of the occupants of either vehicle as the crash remains under investigation.
