Marion Oaks, FL : 17-year-old girl killed in a single-vehicle crash in Marion Oaks on Thursday afternoon, April 14, 2016

A 17-year-old girl was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Marion Oaks Thursday afternoon.

Charisma Francisco, a junior at West Port High School, was the passenger in a two-door 1997 Honda that crashed on Marion Oaks Boulevard just east of Southwest 145th Place Road around 5 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver, Ethan Ruiz, 19, was critically injured in the accident.

FHP troopers aid the car was traveling south on Marion Oaks Boulevard in the left-hand lane when Ruiz lost control. The car went off the road and struck a concrete utility pole.

Authorities said it wrapped around the pole, and the impact snapped the pole in half.

Both occupants had to be extricated from the car, troopers said. Francisco was pronounced dead at the crash site.

Ruiz was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

School officials said Francisco was in the 11th grade at West Port.

Both were wearing their seat belts. Troopers said speed may have been a factor in the accident.
