FOWLERVILLE, MI : SUV crashes into Fowlerville restaurant on Tuesday, January 3rd 2017
A vehicle crashed through the Fowlerville Farms Family Restaurant Tuesday evening, leaving a mess in its wake but, fortunately, no injuries.
Tammy Carney, a manager of the restaurant at 941 S. Grand Ave., said Wednesday that she was called into work around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after the crash, which she believes occurred when an “older lady thought she had hit the brake.”
The SUV barreled through the restaurant’s southwest corner wall and past customers before stopping on the far side of the dining area, she said.
“She had borrowed the vehicle and wasn’t familiar with it. She kind of panicked,” Fowlerville Police Chief John Tyler said about the SUV driver, whom he identified as a 74-year-old Muskegon Heights woman.
Tyler said the driver indicated that she was driving the borrowed 2001 Jeep Cherokee out of the restaurant parking lot when another car pulled out in front of her as it turned into the restaurant parking lot.
“She went to slam on the brakes, but ended up slamming on the accelerator,” the chief explained. “She panicked and hit the accelerator further, driving into the restaurant about 20 feet.”
