Whitewater, CO : CMU student killed, 3 injured in car crash on U.S. Highway 50 near Whitewater on Monday, August 8, 2016

A Colorado Mesa University student was killed and three other people were injured in an accident on U.S. Highway 50 near Whitewater on Monday.

The accident happened just after 1 p.m. at mile marker 44 during a heavy rainstorm.

A 2006 Nissan Altima driving east on the highway lost control, spun and struck the back of a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix that was parked on the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of the highway, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid.

The driver of the Nissan, 21-year-old Rachael White of Grand Junction, was flown by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital, where she died, Reid said.

The driver of the Pontiac, Ayla Black, 29, of Grand Junction, and her two passengers, Jamie McHodgkins, 28, and Annraya Garcia, both of Grand Junction, were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries, according to Reid. The State Patrol didn’t list an age for Garcia.

All four people were wearing seat belts, Reid said.

The State Patrol continues to investigate the accident. Reid said he didn’t know if weather played a factor in the crash.
