Tipton, IN : Kempton man killed in car crash in Tipton County early Thursday morning, July 7, 2016
A Kempton man was killed in a car accident in Tipton County early Thursday morning.
John A. Edwards, 47, was found underneath the engine compartment of his 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck, which was partially on fire, according to a press release from the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department.
At around 12:35 a.m., the Tipton County Communication Center was contacted about an accident at U.S. 31 and S.R. 28. Responding deputies from the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department found Edwards’s truck was in the middle of the southbound lanes of U.S. 31, south of the intersection. The other vehicle, a Chevrolet passenger car, driven by Steven C. Romhill, 47, was found in the intersection.
A witness told deputies Romhill had a green light, and was in the process of turning northbound onto U.S. 31, when Edwards ran a red light and struck the rear of Romhill’s vehicle.
The witness said the pickup then struck a construction barrier on the west side of U.S. 31, traveled across the southbound lane and struck a barrier on the east side of that lane before coming to a stop.
Fire personnel quickly put out the fire after arriving on the scene. According to the press release, Edwards was not wearing a seat belt, which potentially could have prevented him from being ejected from the vehicle.
Romhill was examined on the scene and released.
According to the press release, alcohol and speeding are believed to be contributing factors to the accident. Toxicology results are pending for Edwards.
The sheriff’s department was assisted on the scene by the Tipton County Coroner’s Office, Seals Ambulance Service, Indiana State Police, Kempton Volunteer Fire Department, Cicero Township Volunteer Fire Department, Murrays Body Shop, Martin’s Wrecker Service and Tipton County Emergency Management Agency.
