Spartanburg, SC : Spartanburg High student who died in crash was at fault on Friday, 19th August, 2016
Spartanburg, South Carolina
A Spartanburg High School senior killed in a moped crash Friday was at fault in the collision, according to a traffic collision report.
Rico Matthews, 17, died Friday night after the crash at East Pearl and East Wood streets.
A report from the Spartanburg Police Department states that Matthews made a left turn onto East Pearl Street and struck a pick-up truck that was crossing the intersection. The truck had entered the intersection when the traffic light turned yellow, according to the report.
The 23-year-old driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck was not injured, the report states.
Matthews was pronounced dead at 11:47 p.m. after being transported to the Spartanburg Medical Center.
He was driving home from work at Wendy's when the collision took place, Matthews' mother, Latonia Hollis said Monday.
She said the 2016 moped Matthews was riding was "the only thing he ever bought for himself."
Hollis said she disagreed with the report's findings.
Matthews was active in Spartanburg High's JROTC program and had been a part of the Junior Leadership Spartanburg program.
