Newport News,VA : Man charged with DUI after crash with police car, chase, and second crash on May, Saturday 12th 2018
raffic was blocked for several hours on Warwick Boulevard Saturday night after a three-vehicle incident that police said involved a drunk driver, a police officer and another woman.
It all began just after 9:30 p.m., when the officer was waiting in his patrol car at a red light at Warwick and Prince Drew Road, just north of Christopher Newport University.
The officer was struck from behind by a pick-up truck, said Newport News police spokesman Brandon Maynard. The truck’s driver then sped off, with the patrol officer giving chase.
Then, just south of the side entrance to Riverside Regional Medical Center — just more than a mile down Warwick Boulevard — police say the pickup crashed into a second car.
The driver of that car, a woman, was transported by medics to the nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Maynard said.
The police officer’s injuries were not deemed life-threatening, either, with Maynard saying he was taken to the hospital (not by medics) for evaluation only.
The driver of the pickup truck was taken into custody. He will be charged with DUI and other pending charges, Maynard said. The man’s name and booking photo were not immediately released.
The crash occurred on or near a bridge over Lake Maury that is currently undergoing construction.
More than two hours after the wreck, the typically busy stretch of Warwick was still blocked in both directions, with investigators peering on the roadway and around the vehicles with flashlights.
The blocked area began at the intersection of Warwick and Gatewood Road and ended near The Mariners’ Museum, at the intersection with J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.
The police cruiser, with its hood up, was still on the scene two hours later, facing south on Warwick. The damaged small red vehicle was in the northbound lanes, but facing south. And the damaged pickup truck was a bit further down the roadway, in the northbound lane but facing diagonallyacross the road.
Tow trucks came around midnight to take the cars away, with the thoroughfare reopened shortly thereafter.
