SARASOTA COUNTY, FL : Driver dies and 2 others hurt in Sarasota County I-75 crash in the center lane of I-75 approaching mile marker 174 on Tuesday, 31st July 2018

A driver was killed and two others were injured in a multiple vehicle crash that shut down part of Interstate 75,the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

According to the FHP, Thomas Mykins, 63, of Port Charlotte was driving a Ford Fiesta north in the center lane of I-75 approaching mile marker 174 at about 4:45 a.m. An unknown vehicle was flashing its headlights at a Ford Edge driven by Mikayla Stout, 38, of St. Petersburg in the left lane.

Mykins moved into the right lane to allow the unknown vehicle to pass and then moved back into the center lane. In doing so the left side of the Ford Fiesta collided with the right side of the Ford Edge, which ran off the road and struck the guardrail multiple times.

The Ford Fiesta stopped in the left and center lanes, where it was struck by a Toyota Tundra driven by Donald Cambensy, 60, of Palm Coast. Cambensy said he did not see the Ford Fiesta before the crash.

Mykins then got out of the Ford Fiesta, which was in the left lane of I-75, and stood near the driver’s side door.

A Chevrolet Suburban driven by Frank Machtolff, 64, of Punta Gorda failed to see the Ford Fiesta and was unable to stop in time. The front of the Chevrolet struck the right side of the Ford. The impact pushed the Ford into Mykins, who was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

Stout was not injured. Cambensy received minor injuries and was treated at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Machtolff received minor injuries and was not hospitalized. All drivers were wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.
