Two Easton residents were involved in a crash Saturday, Feb. 20, near Georgetown, Del., that left a 23-year-old Marydel, Del., woman dead, one man in critical condition, and two with minor injuries, Delaware State Police say.
Police said Samantha Potter was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident happened at about 3:58 p.m. on West RobbinRoad, at the intersection of Redden Road, northwest of Georgetown, police said.
Police said their investigation determined that Potter, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling northbound on West Robbins Road approaching the intersection at Redden Road, and for unknown reasons failed to stop at the stop sign.
Easton resident Miguel Hernandez-Alberti, 28, was driving a Ford F-350 box truck west on Redden Road and hit Potter’s vehicle when she drove into his path, police said.
The box truck hit the right side of the Sonata and knocked it off the road, where it ended up facing west along a drainage ditch. The truck also left the road, hit a tree and caught on fire, police said. Hernandez-Alberti and his passenger, Gerardo M. Alberto, 35, of Easton, were able to get out of the truck before it caught fire, and a neighbor put out the fire quickly, police said.
Potter’s passenger in the Sonata, Daniel Bashelor, 32, of Georgetown, was flown to Christiana Hospital by medevac, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
Hernandez-Alberti and Alberto had minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene, police said.
Redden Road was closed for about four and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared, and the investigation is ongoing.
