St. Augustine, FL : St. Augustine man crashes into 3 cars while bolting from officers on Wednesday, 25th March, 2020
A St. Augustine man had run-ins with St. Augustine police and St. Johns County sheriff’s deputies over the weekend. He sped away from both encounters in his pickup truck, striking three different vehicles as he fled the police on the State Road 312 bridge.
But authorities eventually captured Anthony Gomez, and now he faces a number of charges tied to the incident
Gomez, 26, was charged with child neglect, three counts of hit and run, two counts of fleeing and eluding police, and resisting arrest stemming from the incidents, which occurred Sunday. He was released from jail Monday afternoon on $5,000 bail, booking records show.
Gomez’s exploits began Saturday afternoon, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. A man reported Gomez headed to his house near the St. Augustine outlet malls armed with a gun just after 3:15 p.m. The man told deputies Gomez was upset with him due to rumors he was sleeping with Gomez’s girlfriend.
Deputies canvassed the area and spotted Gomez in his Chevy Silverado backing into a driveway along Cabernet. An officer stopped Gomez and noticed a young child buckled into a car seat in the truck’s back seat. Gomez sped off, heading toward the mall as the deputy approached the vehicle. He was not pursued, the report stated.
But that didn’t end Gomez’s reckless driving. A St. Augustine police officer spotted his pickup southbound on Ponce De Leon Boulevard about four hours later, speeding through the intersection at State Road 207. The officer caught up with Gomez and stopped his vehicle near the Walgreen’s just south of State Road 312, according to a St. Augustine police report.
