Beech Island, South Carolina
A 4-year-old was killed and a school bus driver and second pupil injured Wednesday morning when their bus collided with a tractor-trailer on a rural two-lane road in Aiken County.
Coroner Tim Carlton said Kyrie C. Henry, a Greendale Elementary preschool pupil, was pronounced dead at the scene. It was the first time in almost 20 years a child has died inside a South Carolina school bus from an accident, state school officials said.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said traffic investigators determined the bus was traveling north on Beech Island Avenue near Scarborough Avenue and the semi was in the southbound lane, where the collision occurred.
There were indications the truck driver attempted to take evasive actions, according to the coroner.
The crash was reported to police at 6:49 a.m. Jones said the bus was not stopped for a pickup, but moving when the collision occurred.
The bus driver, Barbara Moore, 51, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center, according to Jones.
Merry Glenne Piccolino, the public information officer for the Aiken County Public School District, said Moore will remain in the hospital overnight.
