Fort Walton Beach, FL : Alabama man causes six-car interstate wreck on Tuesday, 4th October 2016

A man from Red Level, Ala., was charged with careless driving after causing a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near mile marker 37 in Santa Rosa County on Tuesday evening.

Jason Dewayne Sasser, who is 42, was seriously injured in the 5:30 p.m. accident.

The drivers and passengers in the other cars either had no injuries or minor injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol media release.

Sasser was driving east on I-10 in the inside lane when he lost control of his pickup truck, colliding with a car in the outside lane, the release said. That car, which was driven by Philip Giammaresi of Santa Rosa Beach, began to rotate.

Sasser's truck then pushed another vehicle off the road, sideswiped a third and hit a fourth car, which rear-ended a fifth car.

The accident caused an estimated $50,000-plus in damages to the six vehicles, the release said.

Everyone was wearing a seatbelt.

Sasser was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, as was 31-year-old Robert Nelson Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, who was in the second vehicle, and both individuals in the fourth vehicle – Margaret and Otis Royce of River Falls, Ala.
