Terre Haute, IN : Covington woman dies in Vermillion County crash on Thursday, December, 28th 2017
A 36-year-old woman from Covington, Indiana, died Thursday after a mid-morning crash on an icy Vermillion County road, police said.
The woman, who was alone in a 2005 Buick passenger car, was identified as Bridget L. Klugow in a news release issued by Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps.
Klugow was entrapped in the car after it spun sideways and the driver’s side door slid into a concrete bridge abutment, police said. A police photo from the scene shows massive damage to the middle of the car, centering on the driver's side door.
Klugow was unconscious when first responders arrived, and after begin extracted from car went into cardiac arrest, police said. Emergency personnel then began to administer CPR, according to the sheriff department's press release.
Rather than airlift Klugow to a hospital, Lifeline Medical personnel, who had arrived at the wreck site, continued CPR, and Klugow was transported to Union Hospital of Clinton via Vermillion County EMS ambulance. Klugow was pronounced dead at Union Hospital, shortly after her arrival, according to Phelps' news release.
The wreck occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on County Road 600 North, just east of County Road 100 W and northwest of Cayuga/Eugene. Excessive speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, police said. Evidence at the site showed Klugow had been westbound on 600 North.
