An 18-year-old girl suffered incapacitating injuries in a car-versus-semi crash in Clarksfield Wednesday morning.Katherine J. Yelle, 18, of Santo, TX, was flown from the Ohio 18 and Chenango Road scene by LifeFlight to Cleveland Metro. She was still in the emergency room at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday.
According to police, Yelle, who was northbound on Chenango Road, failed to stop at a stop sign at the Ohio 18 intersection at 9:23 a.m. She drove under an eastbound semi trailer, driven by Keith J. Plezia, 40, Spencer. Yelle was struck by the drop down axle and rear trailer axle and drove off the south side of the road.
The semi came to a stop on the roadway east of the scene. Plezia was not injured. Police said both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Yelle’s vehicle sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene by Norb’s Towing. The 2006 Kenworth semi was hauling gravel and was towed from the scene by Wilcox Towing, while the tractor portion was able to be driven from the scene.
Citizens EMS, Wakeman Fire Department and the Huron County Sheriff’s Office also assisted on the scene.
Alcohol and controlled substances are not suspected in the crash. No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation by the state Highway Patrol Norwalk Post.
