Saunders County, NE : One person killed and two others injured in a collision between a pickup truck and a school bus Thursday morning in northwest Saunders County on August 14, 2014
A 50-year-old Schuyler, Nebraska, man was killed and two other men were injured in a collision between a pickup truck and a school bus Thursday morning in southwest Saunders County.
Steven J. Jedlicka was taken by medical helicopter to Bryan Medical Center’s west campus in Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead, according to Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz. None of the 11 students from East Butler Public Schools nor the bus driver, Lyle A. Divis, 59, of Brainard, was seriously hurt.
All of the students were taken to hospitals in Wahoo and David City to be checked out, said Stukenholtz.
The two injured men in the pickup truck were also taken to Bryan’s west campus in Lincoln, he said. They were identified as Terry Silvester, 56, of Schuyler and Cory Silvester, 41, of Richland. The sheriff said he did not know if they were related.
The crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of County Roads 29 and H near Valparaiso, Stukenholtz said. The bus was headed west on H Road and the pickup was headed south on 29 when they collided. The intersection has no stop signs.
The sheriff said the bus driver was able to keep the bus upright but the pickup rolled before coming to rest in a ditch.
“The driver of the pickup was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck,” Stukenholtz said. “No one in the pickup was wearing a seat belt. If they had been, their injuries would’ve been much, much less.”
Investigators were working to determine the cause of the crash, which happened two miles west of Nebraska Highway 79 and two miles south of Nebraska Highway 92.
East Butler Superintendent Sam Stecher said the bus was taking students to school in Brainard. That school building serves students in prekindergarten through 12th grade, he said.
Stukenholtz says the pick-up was heading south on County Road 29; the bus westbound on County Road H. The intersection is not marked.
