Kent County deputies say two bicyclists were seriously injured after they were struck by a vehicle in Gaines Township.
It happened at 7:49 a.m. Saturday on Hanna Lake Avenue, south of 92nd Street.
Deputies say 76-year-old Clarence Doornbos and 69-year-old Claire Elgersma were riding their bicycles south on Hanna Lake when they were struck by an SUV. The SUV was being driven by 83-year-old Gerard Geerligs, that was also traveling southbound.Doornbos died of his injuries at a local hospital. Deputies say Elgersma was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, but deputies do not believe fog was a factor in the crash. They also say Elgersma was wearing a high-visibility top.
It’s unclear at this time if charges will be sought against the driver.
Doornbos was a former band teacher at Grand Rapids Christian High School. He retired in 2001.
