Castle Rock, CO : Colorado State Patrol trooper hit, killed by vehicle on I-25 south of Castle Rock on Friday, November 25, 2016

A Colorado State Patrol trooper was hit and killed by a commercial vehicle Friday as he was investigating a crash on Interstate 25 south of Castle Rock.

Trooper Cody Donahue, an 11-year veteran of the State Patrol, died at the scene, and the northbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours. The Denver Post reported Donahue was outside of his vehicle when he was hit by the truck, which belonged to a commercial food service company.

“We don’t call them accidents for a reason. This was a crash,” Trooper Josh Lewis told reporters. “And crashes, especially like this, can absolutely be avoided.”

Maj. Steve Garcia with the State Patrol said Donahue, who was assigned to the agency’s nearby Castle Rock office, had elementary school-aged children and a wife.

“Cody was a really good kid and he had two beautiful children. … He’ll be really missed,” Garcia said.
A procession of law enforcement vehicles accompanied the trooper’s body from the scene as officers lined the streets, standing at attention. Meanwhile, the State Patrol was trying to comfort employees and their families after what has been a tough couple of years.
