TOMBSTONE, AZ : A two-vehicle accident last week on Highway 80 on Thursday, December, 28th 2017
Citations have been issued following a two-vehicle accident last week on Highway 80 near the Tombstone Fire Station involving an Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) transport bus en route from Douglas to Tucson.
The Dec. 19 accident occurred when a passenger vehicle in front of the prison bus stopped in the roadway near Camino San Rafael. The driver of the bus was able to stop without hitting the vehicle, but the bus was rear-ended by another car. The collision sent four inmates to the hospital.
An occupant of the rear vehicle was also transported to the hospital for minor injuries, said Tombstone Marshal Bob Randall. The drivers of both passenger vehicles were cited for traffic violations.
“A total of 17 inmates and two staff were on the bus at the time of the incident,” said ADC spokesman Bill Lamoreaux. “The four inmates who were transported to Canyon Vista Medical Center for further medical evaluation returned to prison that same day.”
ADC personnel from Douglas and Tucson responded to the scene to assist with maintaining security until another bus arrived, said Lamoreaux. The non-injured inmates were transferred onto that bus and continued to Tucson.
Lamoreaux said the inmates were not part of a prison work crew.
