Kansas City, KS : Chase involving stolen truck ends in KCK with crash, truck flipping on Interstate 35 near the 18th Street Expressway on Tuesday, June 7, 2016
A chase involving a stolen pickup truck out of Independence ended with a rollover crash Tuesday afternoon.
Police say the dark-colored pickup truck was stolen out of Independence. Kansas City, MO, police began following the suspect from the air. Then Kansas Highway Patrol took over from the ground.
The chase went from Independence to Kansas City, MO, then Overland Park, KS, before it ended on northbound Interstate 35 near the 18th Street Expressway. A deputy in a highway patrol cruiser came up to the pickup truck and nudged it along the rear side using a "pit maneuver." This caused the truck to cross all lanes of traffic, flip onto the grass and come to rest on ramp.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says it's a judgement call for troopers to end pursuits with tactical vehicle intervention.
"We do it when it's within our policy," said Lt. Ian Ingram, "and to bring the pursuit to an end would be the ultimate goal of such a procedure."
Troopers busted out windows with guns drawn and pulled a women from the truck. Minor injuries were reported for the woman.
No other injuries were reported during the pursuit, but other cars were damaged during the chase.
"I just kept slowing down, because it looked like it was going to hit me," said Mitch Metzger, whose car crashed during the chase.
Metzger's car hit another vehicle as he tried to avoid the flying truck.
