MATTOON, IL : 27-year-old man dies from injuries suffered in Mattoon crash at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center on Tuesday, 28th April, 2020

A 27-year-old man died Tuesday evening from injuries suffered when his pickup truck ran off the road and hit a tree along Western Avenue.

Benjamin Harrington, 27, of Mattoon died at 9:52 p.m. in the emergency room at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center after being taken there by ambulance from the crash scene, said Coles Couny Coroner Ed Schniers.

Mattoon Police Department crash report information stated that witnesses reported seeing the pickup being driven recklessly westbound in the 2300 block of Western Avenue. The truck then reportedly passed a car at a high rate of speed before running off the road and hitting a tree in a yard on the south side of Western at 9:05 p.m. The report stated that the truck then caught on fire, and the driver had to be extricated from this vehicle.
