According to police, the driver of the car has been identified and arrested on charges of driving under the influence and assault.
Police said Tuesday that Synda Collins, 26, was driving the Dodge sedan west on Abbott when she collided with the cyclist, who was traveling east in the same lane.
The cyclist, who has not yet been identified, sustained a critical head injury in the crash, though police said he was wearing a helmet at the time. As of Tuesday the cyclist remains in the hospital.
Police at the scene conducted field sobriety tests on Collins, before eventually arresting her for Operating Under the Influence and first degree assault.
Collins has been booked into the Anchorage Jail with a combined $15,000 bail.
Anchorage police also took this opportunity to underscore the importance for drivers to see cyclists.
"As a reminder during this bicycle season, it’s important for motorists to keep an eye out for bicyclists," APD said in a community message.
