Woodland Hills, CA : 2 men killed, female injured in crash on Vanowen Street in West Hills on Sunday, November 13th 2016
Woodland Hills, California
Two men in their 20s were killed in a West Hills traffic crash Sunday after their BMW crashed with a Toyota Camry and then struck a light pole and fire hydrant.
The two-vehicle crash occurred about 6 p.m. near the intersection of Vanowen Street and Platt Avenue, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. The men in a 2001 BMW 530i were traveling eastbound on Vanowen Street at an “unsafe speed,” when the car collided with the left front side of a 2014 Toyota Camry that was turning left from westbound Vanowen Street to southbound Platt Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer John Guzman said.
The resulting impact from the crash caused the BMW to slide sideways into the southeast corner as the car collided with the curb, knocked down a light pole and sheared a fire hydrant, Guzman said.
Because of the downed light pole, water flowing from the sheared hydrant caused live wires on the ground at the accident site.
The water from the fire hydrant rose higher than 50 feet in the air, Guzman said. Crews from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power were sent to turn off the power and close the hydrant.
Firefighters pronounced the men dead at the scene. Initially, authorities had said the two people who died were teenagers. However, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Monday that they were adult males.
Their identities were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Camry’s female driver, a 44-year-old West Hills resident, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, Humphrey said.
