Washington Township, NJ : South Jersey high school student died after being hit by a vehicle on a South Jersey street on Saturday, April 23, 2016

A South Jersey high school student hit by a car Saturday in Washington Township has died, police confirmed Monday.

Gavyn Connolly, 15, a Timber Creek High School freshman, was struck by a car just after 8 p.m. near a Washington Township High School-sponsored carnival on Route 42 near Greentree Road, according to Washington Township Police spokesman Capt. Dennis Sims.

She was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, according to police.

The driver was Sterling Knight, 21, of Stratford, according to Washington Township Police. He has not been charged. The investigation is ongoing. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, Sims said.

Friends and teachers grieved on social media Monday, vowing to wear purple — the teen's favorite color — Tuesday and to play each field hockey game for Connolly, "the most courageous and prettiest girl I knew," one classmate tweeted.

A Timber Creek science teacher tweeted he'd "give anything to teach Gavyn just one more day."
