HOBBS, NM : New Mexico sheriff killed in car crash on Tuesday, January 17th 2017

A southeastern New Mexico sheriff has died in an apparent car crash.

The Lea Country Sheriff's Office said Sheriff Steve Ackerman was killed Tuesday in a crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The office says New Mexico State Police is handling the investigation.
