West Sacramento, CA : Multiple people injured after 9-vehicle crash on I-80 in West Sac on Tuesday afternoon, June 16, 2015
West Sacramento, California
A portion of Interstate 80 at Highway 50 in West Sacramento was closed for four hours Tuesday afternoon after a big rig crashed into eight vehicles, the California Highway Patrol said.
About 10:30 a.m., a big rig driven by 63-year-old Christopher B. Ayala, of San Francisco, failed to slow down for merging traffic. He was driving in the middle lane of I-80 at the time, near the Highway 50 connector just west of Reed Avenue, going about 55 to 60 mph, the CHP said.
Ayala slammed into the cars near West Capitol Avenue, not far from the IKEA shopping center. A CHP spokesman said he "plowed through" the vehicles in front of him. It's not clear why Ayala wasn't able to stop.
I-80 traffic was diverted to eastbound Highway 50 until all lanes were reopened at about 4:45 p.m.
The eight other drivers were identified as: Alvin Ng, 23, of Singapore, in a Ford Fusion; Karl W. Garrett, 28, of Chico, in a Toyota Corolla; Jayvadan Patel, 56, of Yuba City, in a Dodge Caravan; Frishta Azizi, 34, of West Sacramento, in a Honda Civic; Anthony V. Rocha, 55, of Roseville, in a Ford Escape; Eric Melby, 53, of West Sacramento, in a PT Cruiser; Pedro C. Camacho, 47, of Sacramento, in a Ford F250; and Dakoda Hahn, 19, of Susanville, in a BMW 325.
Among the nine total vehicles involved, there were four passengers.
Patel complained of pain to his right side near his rib cage, and suffered minor abrasions. Azizi told police she was experiencing some discomfort in her left knee.
Melby broke his arm and ribs and suffered a laceration to the head. Camacho complained of his cheek bone hurting. Two of the passengers also had some pain, they told police. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
After the big rig hit the cars, it left the roadway toward the center median and eventually came to a stop up against a tree.
All lanes were cleared by 4:20 p.m.
No arrests were made.
Police said Ayala wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the wreck.
