Trinidad, CO : Stolen Corvette hits semi-trailer head-on in fatal southern Colorado crash on Tuesday evening, March 29, 2016

The driver of a stolen 1994 Corvette died after slamming head-on into a semi-trailer in southern Colorado on Tuesday evening.

The Colorado State Patrol said the Otero County wreck on U.S. 350 near Colorado 71 is still under investigation.

The crash happened about 4:45 p.m. when the Chevrolet sports car, which had been stolen in Trinidad, was heading eastbound and swerved into the highway's westbound lanes, colliding with the semi.

After impact, the Corvette was pushed backward as it rotated and came to rest facing north, according to the State Patrol.

The semi continued westbound before traveling down an embankment and rolling onto its right side, authorities say.

When officers arrived at the wreck, the Corvette was ablaze.

The Corvette's driver died on scene. Authorities say he has not been identified.

The semi-trailer's driver was able to escape his vehicle and was not injured.

"It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor," the State Patrol said.
